Listen to rain on the roof. Real or recorded, it works.
Rain sounds tell your nervous system that you're safe and sheltered.
There's a reason rain sounds are the most popular background noise for sleep and focus. Something deep in us recognizes that sound as safety. Rain outside means you're inside. You're dry. You're sheltered. The world is doing its thing, and you don't have to be out in it.
If it's raining today, stop and listen. Really listen. The rhythm on the roof, the gurgle in the gutters, the way it rises and fades. If it's not raining, find a recording. Put it on softly. Close your eyes for a moment and let your body believe it's a rainy afternoon with nowhere to be.
Rain gives you permission to slow down in a way that sunshine doesn't. Sunny days feel like they demand something of you. Rainy days say: stay in, be quiet, do less. Today, whether the rain is real or imagined, give yourself that permission.
Try this today
- If it's raining, open a window slightly and listen for three minutes
- If it's dry, play a rain sounds recording at low volume while you work
- Make a warm drink and sit with the sound of rain, doing nothing else
