Lucky Item

A lucky item (ラッキーアイテム) is a small object said to support your fortune for the day, often listed alongside omikuji results or daily horoscopes. Examples include “a blue handkerchief,” “a caramel candy,” or “a wristwatch.” The idea is that being aware of this item throughout the day will bring you a little extra luck.

Origins of the lucky item concept

The notion of “carrying something for good fortune” is universal across cultures, from four-leaf clovers to rabbit’s feet. In Japan’s omikuji tradition, lucky items became a common addition relatively recently. They spread not so much through shrine-original omikuji, but through published horoscope calendars and morning TV fortune segments that popularized the format.

You do not need to take it literally

There is no obligation to perfectly equip yourself with the day’s lucky item. The real value is more subtle:

  • Simply being aware of it shifts your mood
  • It gives you a reason to notice things you normally overlook
  • It can become an excuse to visit an unfamiliar shop or aisle

Think of it as a gentle nudge rather than a requirement. Not having the item in your pocket does not mean your luck drops.

Common lucky items

The items that appear on omikuji tend to be everyday objects:

  • Stationery (pencils, notebooks, mechanical pencils)
  • Clothing (a blue handkerchief, white socks)
  • Food (caramel candy, salt, green tea)
  • Natural objects (flowers, leaves, a round stone)
  • Accessories (a wristwatch, a silver ring)

Rarely will you be asked to find something exotic. Almost everything is something you could carry if you just paid attention.

Lucky items on Yuru Omikuji

On Yuru Omikuji, each fortune comes with a lucky item that matches the personality of that day’s character voice.

  • A mystical character might suggest “a round stone” or “something silver”
  • A news-anchor character might suggest “a memo pad” or “a black pen”
  • A grumbling Kansai-dialect character might suggest “a hard candy” or “whatever is left in the fridge”

Enjoy the slightly odd lucky items that match each day’s character.
