Suekichi (Future Fortune)

Suekichi (末吉, future fortune) is a fortune label meaning “your luck will slowly trend upward over time.” The character “sue” (末) means “later” or “what comes next,” so suekichi is best read as a fortune with a built-in time delay: your peak is not right now, but something good lies a little further ahead.

Suekichi is not “half-hearted luck”

Some people look at suekichi and interpret it as “mediocre fortune” or “consolation prize luck.” That reading misses the point.

In traditional omikuji commentary, suekichi is paired with advice like:

  • Now is the time for preparation
  • Do not rush; handle what is in front of you carefully
  • Your efforts will eventually be rewarded

It is not flashy, but it is practical. Think of suekichi as luck that builds slowly and lasts, rather than luck that arrives all at once.

Daikichi vs. suekichi

LabelTime horizonCharacter
DaikichiPeak is nowFlashy, full of momentum
SuekichiRising toward the futureQuiet, long-lasting

Placed side by side, daikichi is the sprinter and suekichi is the marathon runner. For people in the middle of a long game (work projects, academic pursuits, skill-building), suekichi may actually be the better fit.

What to do after drawing suekichi

On a suekichi day, rather than rushing into big decisions:

  • Recall one goal you are working toward over the next six months to a year
  • Take just one small step forward (research something, ask someone, start lightly)
  • Do not worry if you do not see immediate progress

That approach aligns perfectly with what the fortune text is trying to tell you.

Suekichi on Yuru Omikuji

On this site, we honor suekichi’s original character while offering labels like jisho-suekichi and kame-suekichi, each with its own personality. All of them share the same core message: “slow, but definitely heading in a good direction.”
