Peel a mandarin slowly. Winter can wait.

Major cold is said to be the coldest point of the year. A slow, small task fits it well.

the coldest day of the year, a mandarin peeled in one long strip

Today is Daikan, major cold. In the traditional calendar it falls at the deepest part of winter, when the air outside is at its least forgiving.

In many Japanese homes, this is mandarin season: a bowl of small oranges on a low heated table. Peeling one is a quiet little project. Some people try to get the whole peel off in one piece. If it tears, the fruit tastes exactly the same.

Let today be a calm one. Keep your feet warm, skip one errand that can wait, and peel something slowly while the cold does its thing outside.
