Out with the demons, in with good luck.

Setsubun is the day before the start of spring. People throw roasted beans to drive bad luck out.

the demons are chased out again, next year they know the way back

Today is Setsubun, the day before Risshun, when winter turns into spring in the old calendar. In Japan, people throw roasted soybeans and shout "Demons out, luck in!"

Every year the demons get chased out of countless homes. And every year they come back, knowing perfectly well that beans are about to be thrown at them. You have to admire that kind of commitment.

Today's luck runs backwards: what gets chased away might come back around carrying something good. Eat as many beans as your age and wait for spring.
