Turn off one light tonight.
Rooms that are too bright tire your brain. Tonight, dim is fine.
Fluorescent lights flooding a room are something we mostly stop noticing. But your eyes and brain absolutely notice. Bright light at night suppresses melatonin and quietly drags down the quality of your sleep.
In Scandinavian hygge culture, evenings are intentionally dim. Overhead lights off, only soft lamps and candles. At first the dimness feels strange. With time, it becomes the most comfortable setting in the world. Whole cultures, in other words, prioritize dark over bright after sundown.
Tonight, kill one of your overhead lights. Use only a lamp, soft warm bulbs, or a candle. The whole space settles a notch, and your breath slows along with it.
Try this today
- Turn off one light in your room tonight
- Set up at least one lamp or candle as soft lighting
- Use only warm, low light for the hour before bed
