Pick up a leaf today. Look at it closely.

The smallest things carry the most detail when you bother to look.

When was the last time you actually looked at a leaf? Not glanced at a tree, but held a single leaf in your hand and traced its veins with your eyes? Children do this naturally. Somewhere along the way, most of us stopped.

Today, if you pass a tree or a bush or even a potted plant, pick up one fallen leaf. Turn it over. Notice the color gradients, the tiny imperfections, the way light passes through the thinner parts. It takes ten seconds, and it pulls you completely into the present.

This isn't about nature appreciation as a grand concept. It's about reminding yourself that wonder is available at ground level, for free, anytime you choose to bend down and pick it up.

Try this today

  • Pick up one leaf from the ground on your next walk and examine it for ten seconds
  • Place a leaf on your desk as a small reminder to slow down
  • Notice three different shades of green on your way somewhere today
