Fortune

紅雲随歩起

一箭中青霄

鹿行千里遠

争知去路遥

In English

  • Crimson clouds rise with every step you take
  • a single arrow strikes the blue sky
  • the deer runs a thousand miles away
  • who would guess how far the road goes?
Meaning
Red clouds rise at each step and an arrow strikes the sky, and then the poem stretches out, a deer running a thousand miles down a longer road than anyone guessed. Enjoying the journey, rather than measuring it, seems to be the point.
What to do today
Pick one place you would like to visit or one thing you want to learn, and look up the first step.
A word from the capybara
A thousand miles is a long way, so asking the deer for a ride seems reasonable.

The explanations added by each temple differ. The poems and fortunes follow an Edo-period printed edition.
