Fortune

将軍有異声

進兵万里程

争知臨敵処

道勝却虚名

In English

  • The general's name is spoken far and wide
  • his troops advance ten thousand miles
  • who knows, when facing the foe
  • the way prevails and the boast proves hollow
Meaning
The poem ends with the way prevailing and a fearsome name proving hollow. After the famous general's long march in the first half, it suggests that what you dread may turn out smaller than its reputation once you face it.
What to do today
Try, just once and in a small way, something you have assumed you are bad at.
A word from the capybara
Even a tough-looking rival might turn out to be pretty laid back up close.

The explanations added by each temple differ. The poems and fortunes follow an Edo-period printed edition.
