Blink slowly, like a cat showing trust.
Cats slow-blink to say 'I'm safe here.' Try it on yourself.
Cats have this thing where they look at you and blink very slowly. It's not sleepiness; it's communication. In cat language, a slow blink means trust, comfort, I feel safe with you. It's the feline equivalent of a smile.
Try it on yourself. Sit somewhere comfortable, soften your gaze, and blink slowly. Close your eyes for a beat longer than usual, then open them gently. Do it three times. It feels strange at first, almost too deliberate. But something happens in your face, your jaw relaxes, your forehead smooths, your breathing slows.
You spend all day with your eyes wide open, alert, scanning, processing. This is the opposite. This is telling your own nervous system: I'm safe here. Nothing is chasing me. I can soften. Today, be the cat. Slow-blink at the world and mean it.
Try this today
- Close your eyes slowly, hold for two seconds, then open gently; repeat three times
- Soften your gaze and look at something nearby without focusing hard
- If you have a cat, try slow-blinking at them and see if they blink back
