Forgetting is a skill.

Not trying to remember is what actually lightens the mind.

Trying not to think about something makes you think about it harder. The brain works that way. The moment you tell yourself, "forget this," the memory gets reinforced. Annoying, but true.

The real trick is to not even try to forget. Move your attention onto something completely unrelated. Clean a corner. Take a walk. Talk to someone. Watch a video you like. Just shifting attention sideways lets the original thought fade on its own.

Today is forgetting practice. If something has been stuck in your head, don't "work on letting it go." Pour your attention into something else. Eventually you'll notice that bringing the original thing back to mind takes a moment of effort, which is exactly what you want.

Try this today

  • Set the worry aside without trying to release it
  • Focus for twenty minutes on something completely unrelated
  • Tell yourself: "I'll think about it tomorrow," and close the tab
