No. 79

Enjoy a treat without earning it first.

You don't have to deserve a small pleasure. Today, just have it.

I had the cake before finishing the list, and nothing bad happened

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up a quiet rule: pleasure has to be earned. Finish the work, then you can rest. Hit the goal, then you can celebrate. The treat always comes after the proof. And so it often never comes at all, because the list is never quite done.

Today, try breaking that rule, gently. Have the nice coffee, the slice of cake, the ten minutes of doing nothing, before you've earned it. Not as a reward, just as a thing you're allowed to enjoy because you're a person and it's a Tuesday.

Nothing bad happens. The work is still there afterward, and you return to it a little softer. You are not a machine that runs on deserving. Sometimes the kindest thing is to simply take the good thing, no receipt required.
