Day and night are even. You don't have to tip either way.

On the spring equinox, day and night are about the same length. Balance is the whole point today.

day and night share the hours, my tea and sweet share the plate

Today is Shunbun, the spring equinox. Day and night are close to equal in length. In Japan it is also the middle day of the spring higan week, when many families visit graves and eat sweet rice cakes called botamochi.

Think of today as a scale sitting perfectly level. Work and rest, effort and ease: you don't need to lean hard in either direction. Being level is enough of an achievement.

If you feel yourself tipping, put something small on the other side. A short break, a snack, a few minutes outside in daylight and a few more after dark.

Try this today

  • Pick one thing to do and one thing to skip
  • Step outside once in daylight and once after dark
  • Have something sweet with tea
